I realized this identity inclination when I moved to another country a few years ago and was asked many times daily where I was from due to my accent. I noticed that I resonated far more authentically with my state than with my perception of my country’s reputation. However, I feel pristinely and proudly American when I watch the Olympics and see the flag rise with our anthem as an American wins a medal on the podium. I can’t help but cry happy tears and feel fierce pride. As a gymnast with previous Olympic aspirations, I think the accomplishment hits close to home in a powerful way. Perhaps this is the most moving of American dreams to me, and therefore when I feel most proudly and uncomplicatedly American.
